Home Modification and Universal Design: The 5 W’s (What, Why, Where, Who and When?)

This Week covers the importance of home modifications and universal design to the many different market segments. It reviews related concepts (assistive technology, visitability) and discusses barriers associated with home modification and universal design service delivery.

1) Positive Developments in Home Modification/UD; and
2) Making Home Modification/UD a Reality: Customer and Professional Issues

This Week covers positive developments in home modification and universal design, including legislation, products and information tools, assessment instruments, and the growth of private sector companies. Students will learn important communication skills for making suggestions and recommendations for home modifications and universal design changes.

1) Finding the Right Solutions and
2) Making Sense of the Lines: Evaluating Home Mod and UD Drawings and Plans

This Week will equip students with the skills to: individualize home modification strategies to meet users’ needs; locate products; conduct assessments and make recommendations; and evaluate a home modification or universal design project upon completion.

Stalking the Elusive Buck: Funding Resources and Financing

This Week covers how to fund home modifications and how to tap into community resources. It will discuss finding resources within individual communities as well as at state and federal levels. It will also discuss what opportunities are available in the private sector and how to assist customers with locating funding that may be available to them.

1) Working in the Field and
2) Ethics in the Home Modification/UD Field

This Week examines the process of marketing your services by connecting with key home modification and universal design professionals and networks in your community, state and at the national level. It teaches students how to assess the home modification and universal design needs of their community and how to build strong, effective businesses and marketing strategies that respond to that need. This Week will also address what ethics are, why they are important and how they apply to special populations including older persons and persons with disabilities.
