USC and partner ADvancing States release Report on State Units on Aging Efforts in Home Modification
Home Modification and Repairs for Older Adults: Challenges and Opportunities for State Units on Aging
This report shares findings from a 2019 Survey of State Units on Aging conducted by USC and ADvancing States to determine home modification and repair activities for older adults and people with disabilities of all ages. This national survey is part of the Administration for Community Living project, “Promoting Aging in Place by Enhancing Access to Home Modifications.”
In the last decade, new developments have elevated home modification on the public agenda. Safety and support in the home environment is increasingly included in discussions about health in later life, underscoring home modification’s importance in aging in place. However, the extent to which state-level agencies, such as SUAs, contribute to maximizing access to HMRs has not been well understood. This report provides a knowledge base of state HMR activities for older adults and persons with disabilities, current challenges to optimal service delivery, and strategies to support SUAs to meet the HMR needs in their states.
